In order to kickstart our way into the whole blogging experience, we met up earlier to pick out thirty questions to ask each other [trust us, no boredom awaits you] and here they are!

  1. Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 23, and give us line 17. What aspect of your life does this describe? “And being, from the emotion he had undergone, or the fatigues of the day, or his glimpse of the Invisible World, or the dull conversation of the Ghost, or the lateness of the hour, much in need of repose; went straight to bed, without undressing, and fell asleep upon the instant.”, that is the seventeenth line of page 23 from the book A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Well surprisingly that does describe an important aspect of my life and personality; I generally do and feel most things in the extremes and when I feel any emotion it tends to be either all at once or none at all (this can get pretty overwhelming at times) and my very immersive imaginations, daydreams and thoughts along with the real fatigues of life leaves me utterly exhausted on certain days and sleep offers my much-needed sense of peace and solace whenever things get too overwhelming.
  2. What do you think about most? I often find myself thinking about people’s personalities and about what it means to be human or rather humane. I think a lot about the relationship between science, art and faith. My mind often ponders over issues of justice, power and culture. But on a lighter note I also think about what it’d be like to have siblings, because unfortunately I don’t have any siblings.
  3. If you are outside, what are you most likely doing? If I’m outside I’m most likely in a book or stationery and art store or walking and simply observing the ever-changing sky.
  4. What was the last lie you told? What do you mean? *trying my best to sound indignant* I don’t tell lies. There, that’s the last lie I told, right here, right now. Honestly, I don’t quite remember the last time before that and I do try my best to never resort to lying unless it’s for a surprise!
  5. How do you vent your anger? I cry *if I’m by myself*. If not I tend to be very irritable and if I’m close to you I might end up at snapping at you for seemingly trivial reasons. Sometimes just being by myself, crying and writing down my thoughts really does help and besides at least then I ain’t hurting anyone else.
  6. What’s the sound you hate and the sound you love? I absolutely hate the sound of honking cars and the general cacophony of clogged roads during the peak hours. I love the sound of birds chirping at sunrise, running water and the sound of a child’s laughter.
  7. What’s your biggest “what if”? My biggest “what if” is about finding work that I’m truly passionate about.
  8. To you, what is the meaning of life? As Shakespeare said, “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.”. We all possess our own unique talents and gifts and when our passions and abilities meet that’s where true fulfilment lies. I believe that ultimately everything that we do, we do for one another, our only take away being our personal sense of fulfilment and happiness. I wish we realized this truth, I wish we realized that the money that comes along with it is merely a means of sustenance and not the sole purpose by itself.
  9. What’s your favourite song lyric and why?  I can’t really specify a single lyric, but I love all Sleeping at Last songs because the lyrics are always so meaningful. I absolutely adore the songs Pluto and Sorrow by SAL mainly because I really relate to the song Pluto and Sorrow comforts me when I’m feeling the blues because I feel understood and embraced if one were to personify the effect of music on our souls.
  10. Who, according to you, would be the best person to call at the oddest of hours and be comfortable about it? Personally, the only people I’d ever feel comfortable calling at odd hours would either be my parents or my Best Friend and co-blogger Shar!
  11. Do you like the smell of gasoline? Why or why not? do not like the smell of gasoline. I can’t quite pinpoint a single reason but I think it’s because it reminds me of fire and smoke and being razed down to embers. Whenever I pass by a gasoline tanker or filling station the only things I’d ever notice was the word FLAMMABLE written in bright red ink and the convenience stores. The irony never got more obvious.
  12. Do you have any obsessions right now? Right now, I’m obsessed with Winnie the Pooh, watercolour painting and calligraphy.
  13. What’s the last thing you purchased? The last thing I purchased was watercolour paper and brushes from an art studio.
  14. Where were you yesterday? Describe one detail in the scenery that was prominent and important.  Yesterday I had gone to school to purchase textbooks for the next grade and there was a general air of excitement and anticipation as there was an independently organized TED conference happening later that day. Everyone was rushing around ensuring that all the preparations were perfect, there were student photographers and teachers were supervising the preparations. Later in the day I went to the pool for my swimming lesson only to realize that it had been cancelled due to the impending storm which never really happened. Sometimes that’s how life is we can prepare all we want but at the end of the day nature takes its own course; the rush of cool wind through my hair made up for the slight disappointment though.
  15. What is your secret weapon to get someone to like you [as a person or friend]?  I don’t really have a secret weapon but I am a good listener and try my best to make the other person feel comfortable enough to open up to me. Besides I find it easier to reciprocate and share my thoughts when the other person is comfortable talking to me. Wow, I just shared with you the secret age old art of conversation, I know that can hardly be called a secret weapon but, oh well.
  16. Give me your top five favourite Tumblr blogs. This. Is. Really. Hard.  Alright I really like the blogs eearth, all the fyp blogs, word-stuck and other-wordly, theliteraryjournals and cwote in no particular order. Also I really like quite a few study blogs like roundlittledog, phycisists-need-love-too, philosonista and many other blogs. I love Tumblr in general and every single blog I follow so this was seriously very difficult.
  17. What do you think is Satan’s last name? [XD] Satan ain’t got no last name, like Adele. Even if he did, he wouldn’t tell you because he’s completely erased his previous identity.
  18. Are you the kind of friend you would want to have as a friend? I do think I’m a very loyal and trustworthy friend so in that sense, yes, I do think I’m the kind of friend I would want as a friend. But I suppose at times I can come across as clingy or perhaps even intrusive because if I’m close to you I simply cannot handle it if I feel like someone is being unfair or rude towards you and I really want to help you if you’re going through a tough time which can sometimes come across the wrong way.  Personally, I do take a long time before I confide in someone and sometimes I really don’t know if I want to be left alone or if I want to talk to someone. I don’t really know if I’m the kind of friend I would want as a friend.
  19. What song always makes you happy when you hear it? Honestly music always makes me feel better, sometimes when I’m upset even listening to sad music makes me feel better simply because music makes me feel.  But songs like Life, Daughter and Joy by Sleeping at Last, classical instrumental music and Spring from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons always makes me happy because it reminds me of all the goodness in the world. And then there are songs like Uptown Funk and Can’t stop the feeling and Happy which are instant mood boosters. Jeez, I really don’t know how to give short and precise answers…
  20. Can insanity bring on more creativity? Yes, I do think that insanity can bring on more creativity which is perhaps the reason why creativity and genius is often considered insanity in the person’s lifetime. This is referring to both insanity as a social construct and insanity as a state of mind or condition.
  21. What is the single best decision you have made in your life so far? I don’t think that there is any such decision which I would consider the single best decision of my life. I think that while we all make our own choices, regardless of whether they seem good or bad, in the end it all works out for the best.
  22. What do you say during awkward silences? Nothing. I’m the one who makes  it awkward. Alright, well I generally start talking about school or something. I know, I’m boring.
  23. You just got a free plane ticket to go anywhere you want to. Where would you go if you had to leave right away? And with whom? Right now, if I had a plane ticket to go anywhere I wanted to, I would choose to travel through Japan and Korea with my best friend Sena.
  24. If the entire world were listening to you right now, what would you say? All I have to say is that, we don’t have to be against each other and that we may be different but that’s our superpower and if we joined forces and understood each other, instead of constantly fighting and seeking this illusion of power by imposing our ideas on others; while our true power is within us. If only we worked together we would all be wiser, stronger and better.
  25. Is there a certain quote you live by? I’ve never really thought of this before but now that I think about it, I really live by the quote, “If you never try, you’ll never know.”, I’m not sure who said it but that basically sums up my thought process behind most of the decisions I make.
  26. Are you friends with the people you were friends with two years ago? Yup, totally. Shar and I have been friend for three years now.
  27. Who was the last person that you pinky promised? I don’t think I’ve ever pinky promised anyone…. I know, I’m weird.
  28. What is something you wish you had more of? I wish I had more self-confidence, I wish I could believe in my ability to grow and learn through failure and setbacks and I wish that this way I could improve my self-esteem and self-worth.
  29. What is the first thing you notice in someone? The first thing I notice in someone is simply the way they carry themselves, whether they look confident, shy, anxious, thoughtful, observant, engrossed, lost or even in awe, wonder like a child. I suppose these are things that draw me to people, their expressions and their vibe.
  30. What are three things most people don’t know about you? Most people don’t know most things about me, I can’t really think of three specific things. Generally, most people don’t know much about my family, my obsessions and my real, innermost thoughts.

  1. Six songs you listen to the most? Currently, the six songs I’m listening to the most are Can’t Stop The Feeling by Justin Timberlake, Young Blood by Noah Kahan, The Story Never Ends [The Piano Version] by Lauv, Que Sera by Hannah Montana [it’s not anywhere near Doris Day’s original (which I love) but I’ve got memories to tag along], Young As The Morning, Old As The Sea by Passenger and Ara Batur by Sigur Ros. [Oh, and have you heard Hold On by Chord Overstreet or We’re All Stars by India Bourne?]
  2.  If you could meet anyone on this earth, who would it be? I can’t really pick any fictional characters since it’s been clearly mentioned “on this earth”, so…um…I suppose I’d meet one of my bestest friends in the entire world [ahem] who I haven’t seen in a long time [ahem] or Chris Evans.
  3. What does your latest text message from someone else say? My latest text was actually from Frankie and it says “Nah, that depends on your comfort level”.
  4. What’s your strangest talent? My strangest talent is that I can raise my left eyebrow – it’s not that strange [it’s not even a talent, Shar] , but I am strangely proud of it.
  5. Complete the sentence, “Girls…Boys…”. Girls are human. Boys are also human. Period. [*drops mic*] Gender equity, y’all!
  6. Ever stuck a foreign object up your nose? *scratches cheek nervously* Um…when I was five [?seven?nine?] I threw up a bead and it fell into my nose. Even had to go to the ENT specialist and all that jazz.
  7. Do you have any strange phobias? Not any strange phobias, per se, but I do have a fear of too many mirrors [the carnival kinds, anyone?], athazagoraphobia, atelophobia, slight acrophobia, and thalassophobia [I love the sea, but sea travel…swimming…]. They’re just fancy words, google them up.
  8. If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be? I would change the way I keep my personality locked in, showing off this shy and cold exterior to others. I’m cool, I’m fun, I can be – I just don’t know how to show that. I want to be more expressive and open.
  9. Do you believe in ghosts? How about aliens? I believe in ghosts, that’s a yes, because I believe in everything good. And if there’s so much good in the world, there’s always going to be some bad [although I’m pretty sure my belief in ghosts stemmed from the fact that I thought their intentions had sentiment to them that was good]. Aliens, um, not so much, considering the fact that non-citizens in a country are called, well, aliens. Aquarians [such as me] are portrayed to be obsessed with aliens, but I’m just not – they’re kind of weird.
  10. Most attractive singer of the opposite gender? Lauv is my favourite singer, but attractive? I’d say Adam Levine, Liam Attridge, Enrique Iglesias or Shawn Mendes.
  11. What size shoes do you wear? 7 1/2 to 8. USA. That’s 25 cm.
  12. What would you want to be written on your tombstone? Either Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep [a poem] by Mary Elizabeth Frye or some lyrics from The Band Perry’s If I Die Young.
  13. What is your favorite word? They range from serene and persevere to brumous [of wintry, foggy weather], petrichor [the smell of rain on dry earth], brontide [the low distant rumble of thunder] and meraki [when you leave a piece of yourself in your work].
  14. What is a saying you say a lot? I say Que Sera, Just Do It, and C’est La Vie a lot.
  15. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word ‘heart’? It honestly reminds me of a character in my book [that’s the second thing that came into my mind, though], but “heart” has so much meaning to it. It is the raw truth that we are all human, that there is life, and it is so beautifully tragic.
  16. Basic question; what is your favourite colour or colours? Basic answer: black, blue grey and navy blue.
  17. What would be a question you’d be afraid to tell the truth on? If someone asked me if I think I’d be happy in the future or if they asked me what are my most saddest thoughts.
  18. One night you wake up because you heard a noise. You turn on the light to find that you’re surrounded by MUMMIES. The mummies aren’t really doing anything, they’re just standing around your bed. What do you do? They ain’t doin’ anythin’, I ain’t doin’ anythin’. I’ll probably call Phineas & Ferb if they were real or just go back to sleep or push them out of the door.
  19. You accidentally eat some radioactive vegetables. They were good, and what’s even cooler is that they endow you with the superpower of your choice! What is that power? I had to think really hard about this one, but I’m going with Tony Stark-level tech know-how and intelligence, power mimicry, mind reading/control, or plain old invisibility.
  20. You can re-live any point of time in your life. The time-span can only be half an hour though. What half-hour of your past life would like to relive again? I’d want to relive the last time I laughed really hard or my sixth birthday
  21. You can erase any horrible experience from your past. What will it be? That one time I really felt betrayal with my best friend and then arch nemesis. I wish I could forget that. I’m sorry, I haven’t lived so deeply.
  22. What’s something you really want right now? I really, really want wax seals and I also want to have a movie marathon. But, if we’re talking long-term, I want to be happy come what may. And make my parents proud.
  23. Honestly, are things going the way you planned? Absolutely not. Thank you for that cold reminder.
  24. What are your favourite books? My favourite books are the entire Percy Jackson series, we were liars., Everything Everything, and The Da Vinci Code. [I kind of like the underlying message of the new best thing Thirteen Reasons Why, but it also depresses me, so it’s not my kind of book.]
  25. Do you regret anything? Yes. I regret ever compelling my parents to move out of Singapore when I was seven, because god, it changed my entire life. I was so much better back then. That’s one thing I really regret.
  26. Are you more like your mom or your dad? I look and do things mostly like my father, but I have my mother’s interior feelings and personality.
  27. What is your saddest memory? My saddest memories are of my one of my best friends leaving, the people or characters I know being diagnosed with cancer and that one time my mother broke down.
  28. Do you sleep with a stuffed toy? No? No, I do not. I have never. I was a weird child, I know, I didn’t even have imaginary friends.
  29. If you could change one thing in the world, what would you change? I’d change the way everyone is so competitive, that would change a lot of things in turn, and I’d also want them to be sacrificial.
  30. What is the meaning of life? The meaning of life is what you give it. The whole meaning of life is legacy and perhaps that is the most ultimate goal of humanity, to be someone who means something in this world, to leave behind things. Life is not the time you exist, it is that pinpoint second you are completely alive, when you’re doing something that has so much impact on this world, you leave it behind for generations. So, life is legacy, am I not right? [This answer was inspired by Paul Kalanithi’s When Breath Becomes Air.]

Yours Randomly,
Frankie & Shar
